Leupold Mark 5HD 2-10X30
The most versatile optic ever?
Since the introduction of the Mark 5HD line of scopes, users have been clamoring for a 10x variable. The Leupold Mark 5HDs have been widely adopted by law enforcement, the military, and consumers in general. Some of the clearest glass on the market, durability, simple controls, and a surprising lack of weight are all contributors to this line’s popularity as hard-use magnified optics. Having used them since their introduction, they remain my go-to scope to this day for long-range work and most any range with a 5.56mm carbine or DMR. The 2-10x magnification range is ideal for LE, defense, and most any other job that is primarily under 500 meters — including hunting. Wrapped into the attributes of the Mark 5HD line, this scope was a shoo-in for an On Target Editors’ Choice Award.
The Mark 5HD is fogproof, waterproof, shockproof, basically bomb-proof — all at only 24 ounces of weight and with a length short enough for use on most any carbine. The tube is 35mm in diameter with a 30mm objective. The elevation turret provides nearly 40 mils of elevation in three turns at 0.10 mils per click with a firm zero stop. Its side-focus parallax knob is huge for those of us with older eyes. The reticle on my test model was the TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle) mounted in the first focal plane. Consistent eye relief at 3.6 inches (2x) to 3.7 inches (10x) allows unconventional shooting positions without losing your sight picture. Parallax free at 40 yards makes it perfect for the most common LE engagement range as well as intermediate-range threats.
Having tested this optic on several rifles, this is one of the most versatile scopes I’ve ever used. At 2-power, you get a great field of view and a clear crosshair. Move out to 500 meters, and you can use the reticle for clear holds (wind or elevation). Currently available with the TMR (illuminated or not) and the PR1 MOA reticles, this scope is suitable for almost any task or preference. If you want a lightweight yet strong all-purpose optic, the Mark 5 HD 2-10X30 ($1,999.99 to $2,499.99) should be at the top of the list.
