Editor’s Choice Award – SIG Romeo-X

Conveniently, the battery compartment of the ROMEO-X is mounted on the right side of its 7075-aluminum housing, meaning a battery swap does not necessitate optic removal. The ROMEO-X is available in two configurations: a Deltapoint Pro footprint (PRO model) or the Shield RMS-C footprint (Compact).

SIG ROMEO-X

Word is quickly getting out that miniature red dot sights will be mounted on the US Army’s new handgun in the very near future. A few manufacturers with some forethought saw this in the tea leaves, prepared for it, and will be reaping the benefits of their advantage over most who have not. SIG Sauer continues to lead the pack, not only racking up the big Modular Handgun System contract for the US Department of Defense (and other NATO allies) but is well positioned to build the optic chosen to be mounted on the pistol as well, which is currently known as the ROMEO-M17.

The all-new ROMEO-X is a black-colored version of the ROMEO-M17 and is offered to commercial customers in two different footprints instead of the one chosen by DOD. The ROMEO-X PRO has the Deltapoint Pro (DPP) footprint, while the Compact model wears the Shield RMS-C footprint designed specifically for micro-compact pistols such as SIG’s P365 family, Glock Slim Line pistols, and many others. Both models of the ROMEO-X use 7075 aluminum in the construction of their housings, and both offer two reticles to choose from: a 2 MOA dot or a 2 MOA dot/32 MOA circle combination. 12 daytime and 3 night vision settings, which are easy to adjust on the fly, provide the ideal dot intensity. Battery life is 20,0000 hours, which can be greatly extended when the sight sits dormant, thanks to MOTAC technology.

The ROMEO-X can be programmed to display one of two different reticle choices: a 2 MOA dot or the 2 MOA dot/32 MOA circle combination shown here. Both PRO and Compact models have an integrated fixed rear sight. SIG’s MOTAC (Motion Activated Illumination) technology preserves battery life when the handgun sits motionless.

What we love most about the ROMEO-X is its low deck height, meaning the sight sits very low on the slide of a pistol, allowing for fast, natural dot acquisition. The sight is mounted so low that a regular-height front iron sight will co-witness with the integrated rear sight within the ROMEO-X housing. The battery compartment is located on the right side of the sight, housing a CR1632 lithium battery, ensuring an easy battery swap without the need to remove, reinstall, and re-zero the optic. Thanks to its intuitive controls and the fact that it has answered the call for all of the features that the shooting public has been asking for, the ROMEO-X line ($399.99 to $449.99) gets our supreme stamp of approval with its 2023 Editor’s Choice Award. Tactile control buttons make illumination and programming changes quick and positive. The low deck height of the ROMEO-X means the suppressor-height sights shown here are not necessary for a co-witness sight picture.
