FN Reflex XL MRD

Micro Compact Redefined
FN America has doubled down on its commitment to the concealed carry market with the latest addition to its growing Reflex line — the 2025 On Target Editors’ Choice Award-winning Reflex XL MRD. While the standard Reflex is fitted with a 3.3-inch barrel, while the XL stretches that out to 3.8 inches. That extra half inch brings some notable benefits — improved muzzle velocity, slightly flatter recoil impulse, and a longer sight radius for better sight tracking when using iron sights.

The grip frame also gets a proportional boost. Height is increased to just over five inches, which allows the Reflex XL to accept flush-fitting 15-round magazines, up from the standard 11-rounders on the original. This taller frame provides a full firing grip for nearly all hand sizes, giving shooters significantly more control when firing rapidly or transitioning between targets. FN includes both 15 and 18-round magazines in the box, the latter extending just slightly beyond the grip. The result is a pistol that feels and handles more like a compact duty gun in the hand but still carries like a micro-compact.

One of the standout features of the XL model — and the Reflex line in general — is its unique internal hammer-fired mechanism. In a market that’s almost entirely dominated by striker-fired designs, FN went a different direction here. The Reflex is a true single-action-only pistol, and the result is a crisp, clean trigger pull that breaks consistently at around five pounds. The reset is equally impressive: short, tactile, and fast, making follow-up shots easy and precise. For shooters who demand a refined trigger in a carry pistol, this alone is worth the price of admission.
Another area where the Reflex XL MRD shines is in its optics setup. The slide comes milled from the factory to accept micro red-dot sights that use the Shield RMSc or Holosun K-series footprints. Rather than using a bulky adapter plate, FN machines two raised posts into the cut to ensure a secure, precise fit for compatible optics. This lowers the overall optic height and improves co-witness capability with the factory-installed suppressor-height sights. These sights are excellent in their own right, featuring a high-visibility orange ring surrounding a tritium insert on the front, paired with a blacked-out, serrated U-notch rear.

In terms of construction, FN didn’t cut corners. The slide is machined from stainless steel and treated with a durable PVD finish (in black or FDE), providing excellent resistance to wear, moisture, and the elements. The frame is molded from color-matched high-strength polymer and features aggressive texturing on all gripping surfaces — enough to ensure a solid hold without being overly abrasive against the skin during carry. The undercut trigger guard and high beavertail allow for a high, comfortable grip, which helps manage recoil and promote a natural point of aim. The gun comes with two interchangeable backstraps to further fine-tune fit.
Slide manipulation is also user-friendly, thanks to deeply cut front and rear serrations that provide excellent traction even with wet or gloved hands. FN also tuned the recoil spring system to be lighter than many competitors, making the slide easier to rack. This is especially beneficial for those with reduced hand strength or anyone operating the pistol in less-than-ideal conditions.

Reliability? Across several hundred rounds of testing — including ball and defensive loads — the Reflex XL MRD ran without issue using both the 15 and 18-round magazines. Feeding, extraction, and ejection were all consistent, and the gun handled both cheap range ammo and premium hollow points with equal ease.
Downrange precision? Here’s where things get really interesting. The FN Reflex MRD is, quite possibly, the most accurate micro-ish compact I’ve tested to date, producing a best-of-test 1.27-inch five-shot 25-yard group using Sig Sauer’s 124-grain V-Crown JHP. Proving that this was no fluke, Federal’s 135-grain Syntech load put all five into a 1.36-inch cluster. Truly impressive performance.

Ultimately, the FN Reflex XL MRD is a standout in a crowded market. It blends smart engineering, excellent ergonomics, and top-tier build quality into a pistol that performs well above its weight class.
