Alps Outdoorz Elite Backcountry Pack System (From $450)

If you’re thinking about refreshing that old rucksack with something a little lighter and one that offers more organization and meat hauling capability, Alps Outdoorz has released a couple of new packs that are worth your consideration this season. The Elite system offers two different-size pack options: the Elite 1800 (shown) and the larger Elite 3800.

Weighing in at just 1 lb., 12 oz. with the included rain cover and drop-down weapon pocket, the Elite 1800 has 1,800 cubic inches of capacity and was intended for short trips or ultralight bivouacs. The Elite 3800 was designed for multi-day backcountry trips and, as the name implies, features a 3,800 cu-in capacity and weighs just 2 lbs., 7 ounces — again with the rain cover. The 3800 also features a drop-down pocket and spotting scope pocket on the exterior of the pack bag for external carriage of these internal-space sucking devices.

The main compartment of both bags feature zippers along both sides of the pack so that the compartment can be fully exposed to access items anywhere in the bag without having to “fish around” and pull-out gear (unlike the typical top-load packs). Inside the main compartment are five mesh pockets to keep smaller items organized and within easy reach. Additionally, the bags feature a zippered top compartment for storing quick-access items and three exterior stretch fabric pockets with buckle adjustment straps for securing larger, more awkward items. Integrated into the bottom of the pack bags are a quick-deploy rain cover and a drop-down pocket that lets the hunter secure their bow or rifle for hands-free walking and climbing.
